Have you ever gone on a quest for something elusive, only to find yourself chasing after nothing?

That was my family’s adventure in Austin, where we eagerly scoured the Austin Community College parking lot—formerly Highland Mall—hoping to spot the legendary little purple birds. Spoiler alert: we came up empty-handed.

But wait! Here comes the exciting twist: The real scoop is that Austin’s beloved Purple Martins have been spotted in droves at La Frontera Village in Round Rock, and they’re ready to put on a show!

We arrived at La Frontera Village, right by Hobby Lobby and Sam’s Club, around 7:35 PM, buzzing with anticipation and eyes wide open for our “purple birds.” Spoiler alert #2: they’re actually not purple at all! Can you believe it?

These beauties sport a stunning dark blue-black plumage with an iridescent sheen that will take your breath away! 😍

While we waited, our minds drifted to other evening spectacles Round Rock offers. The iconic Round Rock Bats are a must-see, and we recommend checking them out alongside the Austin Bats!

But let me tell you, the purple martins bring a new excitement that might outshine them! For nearly 1.5 hours, as the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky transformed into a canvas for the Martins’ aerial ballet. They swooped, swirled, and danced through the twilight, filling the air with their delightful songs and chirps.

It was a mesmerizing experience that felt like nature’s very own celebration!
